Amanda began her academic career in 2002 as an Assistant Professor in Nursing at the School of Nursing, Midwifery & Health Systems at University College Dublin (UCD) where she coordinated several graduate programmes.  Amanda served as Deputy Director of the National Centre for the Protection of Older People from 2008-2014. In 2017, Amanda became an Associate Professor at UCD, and in 2020, joined Trinity College Dublin as Professor in Ageing and Community Nursing at the School of Nursing & Midwifery. Since September 2024, Mandy has been a Full Professor in General Nursing in the School of Nursing, Psychotherapy and Community Health at DCU.

Amanda’s teaching experience spans community health, dementia, gerontological nursing, leadership, public health, and advanced practice. Her research focuses on safeguarding at-risk populations (particularly related to older people), older person care, missed care, public health, and community nursing. She is on the boards of Third Age and Safeguarding Ireland and sits on the preliminary proceedings committee in CORU.  She also served 6 years on the Nursing and Midwifery Board of Ireland’s fitness to practice committee.

As well as numerous peer reviewed publications, Amanda has published two edited books on elder abuse, a co-edited book on gerontology, and is currently working on a book about community-centred care. She is on the editorial boards of the Journal of Elder Abuse & Neglect and the International Journal of Older People Nursing.
